2010 Outlook
Over the past two seasons the Chargers followed basically the same trend of starting slow and ending the season strong, propelling them into the playoffs. With a start against the Ravens, Dolphins and Steelers in 3 of their first 4 games, it wouldn't come as a huge shock to see them start that way again. Overall the Chargers are in great shape. They return a vast majority of their division winning team from a season ago and have added to their linebacking corps significantly. The return of Shawne Merriman coupled with the drafting of Larry English and the free agent signing of Kevin Burnett should be a huge boost to an already good defense.
On offense the Chargers only worry has to be the diminishing abilities of Ladanian Tomlinson. The good news is that Darren Sproles showed last season that he can take on a bigger load of the offense, but Tomlinson needs to be able to at the very least split the carries with Sproles in order for the Chargers running game to be successful. As a passing team Philip Rivers leads the charge with Chris Chambers, Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates. This is an offense that has all the ability in the world to put up significant points and with the increased talent on defense the Chargers should be making another solid push towards the postseason.
The biggest advantage that the Chargers have going for them is their extremely weak AFC West division. They already won the division at 8-8 a season ago and both the Broncos and Chiefs just went through huge rebuilding projects in the offseason. The Raiders meanwhile are in a constant state or rebuilding and haven't been a threat do anybody in the division since their Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay. It's hard to see the Chiefs, Broncos, or Raiders beating out the Chargers unless either the Chargers beat themselves or suffer some serious injuries.

2010 Outlook
The 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars were one of the most injured, beat up teams in all of football. This was no more evident than with their offensive line and the impact was felt throughout the offense. David Garrard was sacked 42 times and running backs Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor had nowhere to run. This season the Jaguars took a huge step in remedying the situation by taking offensive tackle's Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton with their first 2 picks in the draft. They also signed tackle Tra Thomas as insurance in case the Jaguars do go through another injury riddled season. The good news for the Jaguars is that now with a healthy offensive line that includes Eugene Monroe, Vine Manuwai, Brad Meester, Maurice Williams, Eben Britton, Tra Thomas, and Tony Pashos, they not only have quality starters, they have quality depth as well. They have an opportunity to go from one of the worst offensive lines in football to one of the best in one offseason.
So now that the offensive line is in much better shape than it was last season the Jaguars decided to make a change in their play-makers as well. Gone are Fred Taylor, Matt Jones, Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter and in are Torry Holt and rookie wide receiver Mike Thomas. The Jaguars have had huge problems trying to find a receiver through the draft, free agency, or trade. They are hoping that aging Torry Holt will be able to solidify the position while younger wide-outs Mike Walker and Mike Thomas evolve into every down receivers. Watch out for Mike Thomas, he may be the biggest sleeper in this years entire draft!
While Mike Thomas is a huge sleeper in the draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars may be a huge sleeper for this NFL season. They have proven players like Garrard, Jones-Drew, Holt, Manuwai, Meester, M. Williams, R. Hayward, J. Henderson, C. Ingram, Daryl Smith, R. Mathis, R. Nelson and Brian Williams. They also have good, young, up and coming players like Mike Walker, Mike Thomas, Eugene Monroe, Eben Britton, Terrance Knighton, and Justin Durrant. With a great mix of youth and experience, as well as a hungry team and a coach who could be fighting for his job, the Jaguars could be an extremely dangerous team to keep an eye on in an already dangerous AFC South.

What If...???
What if Ted Thompson would have let Brett Favre come back to the Green Bay Packers last offseason?
Now that we seemingly have the answer that Brett Favre is in fact going to stay retired and not play for the Minnesota Vikings, it's time to look back and play "what if". There are about 100 different scenarios that could have played out and here are just a few of the more intriguing prospects.
1. How would have the Packers fared in 2008-2009 had Brett played for the Packers?
In hindsight we have the ability to see that Aaron Rodgers actually outperformed Brett Favre as a whole in 2008-2009. Favre was 343/522 for 3472 yards 22 td's and 22 int's for a rating of 81.0. Rodgers meanwhile was 341/536 for 4038 yards with 28 td's and only 13 int's for a rating of 93.8. Rodger's numbers were far superior to Favre, however even with all of that being said I think it is fair to see that with Brett Favre the Packers could have had a better record. I think it would be insane to say that the Packers were not effected by the offseason maelstrom of media attention and Favre drama and even head coach Mike McCarthy had to miss a training camp practice to have a meeting with Brett Favre. The head coach of the Packers missed a full practice to talk to the franchise's retired quarterback! So had this all not happened it's safe to say that the offseason would have been much smoother, the distractions would have been nullified and the Packers would have had a ton of momentum still from their previous NFC Championship season. It's also safe to say that Favre was still playing at a high level until about the last 6 weeks of the season, a stretch the Packers were 1-5 in anyway with their only win coming against the hopeless Detroit Lions. So even if Favre would have played like garbage in those 6 weeks, its safe to say the Packers wouldn't have done worse than 1-5 anyway. Take a look at games in which the Packers lost though, and it's easy to see a way in which Favre picks up a win or two over Rodgers in close games against Tampa, Atlanta, Tennessee, or Minnesota. For arguments sake lets just say that Brett Favre is able to win games against Tampa (which Rodgers' injury played a huge roll), Tennessee, and the one point loss in Minnesota. The Packers would have been 9-7 and would have won the division. Even in this best case scenario the Packers would have matched up against a hot Philadelphia team and would have played them with an injury riddled team and a run down quarterback. It's safe to say that even in this best case scenario that Packers would have been eliminated in the 1st round of the playoffs.
2. Lets say the Packers knew that Favre was coming back last offseason, would it have changed their draft in 2008?
While obviously I'm not Ted Thompson, I have watched him take the best player available on his draft board regardless of depth at the position to believe pretty whole heartedly that Thompson would have remained fairly true to his board regardless of the Favre decision. I do believe however that if everything else went the way that it did they may not have taken Matt Flynn in the 7th round because there just wouldn't have been a roster spot for him. Had this been the case I would assume that Brett Swain would have then moved up to be taken at pick 209 instead of Flynn, and then the Packers would have selected a different player at pick 217. I wish I could give you a best case scenario here as well, but there wasn't really any impact players in 08-09 that were drafted past pick 217. The Packers could have selected Peyton Hillis who started briefly for the Broncos at RB last season, or maybe Steve Johnson a talented WR that the Bills selected, but neither would have made much of an impact even if they did make the team. If the Packers would have taken a player instead of Brian Brohm the only player taken in that same vicinity that could have maybe helped the Packers would have been OG Mike Pollak who was taken by the Colts.
3. So there were rumors that if the Packers would have gone with Brett Favre in 08-09 that Aaron Rodgers would not sign a long-term deal with the Packers, how would have that played out?
There were some reports that stated he would have not signed a long term deal, there were other reports that he would have asked out of Green Bay, but either way its safe to say that Rodgers wasn't going to be happy in Green Bay too much longer if he would have had to play behind Favre for another year. It's obvious that Favre and Rodgers didn't have exactly the best relationship in Green Bay and lets not forget either that at one point Rodgers was widely considered the top overall pick in his draft class before he was selected by the Packers late in round one. If Favre would have played last season it's easy to see that this whole play/don't play scenario would have played out again in the 2009 offseason much like it has with Minnesota and Favre. If that were the case it would be easy to see Rodgers forcing the hand of the Packers and requesting a trade (like Jay Cutler in Denver). While the Packers would have been reluctant to deal Rodgers, he could have easily said that he would not re-sign next season when he would have been a free agent (assuming there is no uncapped year) and Rodgers and his agent would have known that they really couldn't have used the franchise tag on Rodgers because he wouldn't have played a down in the NFL yet. So the Packers would have had a HUGE mess this offseason, waiting for Favre to decide if he's going to come back or not until July 27th, and meanwhile they probably already either traded away Aaron Rodgers or have severed their relationship to the point that he refuses to re-sign with the Packers past this season. To make matters worse, Rodgers still hasn't played a down in the NFL, so the Packers would have probably been lucky to get a 2nd round pick for Rodgers in a trade, after picking him in the first round. While the 2008 offseason was a huge mess with just Brett Favre involved, 2009 could have been an even bigger disaster with possibly two quarterback battles on Ted Thompson's hands.
4. If Favre would have retired this offseason and the Packers succumbed to Aaron Rodgers' demands and traded him, who would have been the Packers QB this season?
This was the worst case scenario that was facing Ted Thompson and company and may have been ultimately why they decided to partially force Brett Favre out last season. If this scenario would have happened the Packers would have at best been left with Brian Brohm, Matt Flynn (if they actually still would have drafted him), and maybe would have made an offseason move to grab a QB like Sage Rosenfels, Brian Grise, or Jeff Garcia. At worst the Packers maybe would have had just Brian Brohm and maybe a 4th round pick like Stephen McGee. If this scenario would have happened it would have set the Packers back far enough that it probably would have cost both Ted Thompson, and Mike McCarthy their jobs.
5. If scenario 1 played out and the Packers made the playoffs in 08-09, how would it have effected this years draft and schedule?
In this scenario the Packers would have moved from selecting 9th overall to selecting 22nd overall. If the Packers had the 22nd overall pick they obviously would not have gotten B.J. Raji and would have been left with two very high picks still on their board in Michael Oher and Clay Matthews Jr. In this case I believe Thompson would have gone with Oher. The options that they would have had in the 2nd round with possibly two picks (if they traded Rodgers) in the latter parts of round 2 would be almost impossible to predict. The Packers also would have never gotten the 3rd round pick that they received in the Brett Favre deal.
As for the schedule the only changes would have been that instead of playing the Buccaneers and the Cowboys, the Packers would be playing the Panthers and the Giants.
6. If Brett Favre would have come back in 08-09 and played for the Packers, is there any scenario in which the Packers are right now in 09-10 a better football team?
No. I don't see in any way, shape, or form how the Packers are possibly better. There is a good chance that the Packers would have a harder schedule, wouldn't have Clay Matthews or B.J. Raji, wouldn't have the personnel to run a 3-4, possibly would have to start a Sage Rosenfels or Brian Brohm at quarterback and would be coming off more offseason drama this year with possibly a Favre and Rodgers drama filled offseason. I think that there was a good chance that in 2008 the Packers actually could have won 1-2 more games and improved to maybe 8-8 with Favre instead of Rodgers. Even that is a reach when comparing the numbers between Brett and Aaron. Either way the Packers as a team last season weren't good enough even with a Pro-Bowl Brett Favre to do much more than their 6-10 season suggested. Instead they used last season as a building season and got Aaron Rodgers acclimated to the NFL and used the offseason to get two very good 1st round picks and change over to a 3-4 defense. Plus the Packers got the added bonus that all the Favre drama was on the division rival Vikings and not the Packers.
7. Did Ted Thompson make the right decision last year in not allowing Brett Favre to return?
Unequivocally and unquestionably yes. Ted Thompson, Brett Favre, Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers, the Packers organization, the Packers fans, the NFL, and anybody else who was a fan of either the Packers or Brett Favre didn't want to see the whole scenario go down the way it did. It was a shame that Ted Thompson was put in the position that he was to have to make the decision he had to make, and its unfortunate that Green Bay's hero, MVP, and gunslinger had to play for the New York Jets and try everything in his power to play for division rival Minnesota. It's not what anybody wanted but it was what it was and Thompson absolutely made the right decision. The scenarios I went through today are for fun and entertainment but by showing these I am hopefully showing that with Favre coming back last season, there was no bright side left, there was no perfect scenario, no happy ending. In fact Favre probably ended up having a better chance at one last Super Bowl with the Jets than he did with the Packers last season. It would have been nice to have beat the Giants in the championship game and beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl 2 seasons ago and have Favre ride off into the sunset with his Super Bowl trophy and retire as a Packer but it didn't happen that way unfortunately. All Packer fans can ask their General Manager to do from that point forward is make the best decisions possible for the sake of the Packers, and by shunning the franchises greatest player of all-time he did just that, he made the best decision possible and staked his whole career on it.

All-Decade Green Bay Packers
Here is a look at my all-decade Green Bay Packers team. Here were the guidelines:
1. Can only use a player once.
2. Have to limit to a 53 man roster.
3. Has to look like an actual roster would.
4. Had to be a specific year for everybody, except for offensive lineman which was more of a decade achievement award, and long-snapper which was just given to Rob Davis.
5. Players had to play between the 99-00 season and the 08-09 season.

2010 Outlook
The Texans have three huge question marks that they will need to answer if they want to progress as a franchise. 1. Is Matt Schaub the franchise quarterback, and if he is, can he stay healthy enough to lead this team to the Playoffs and beyond? Schaub certainly is talented enough to be a starting QB in the NFL and his biggest problem so far has been himself and his injuries. In the offseason the Texans traded away Sage Rosenfels so this is for sure Schaub's team and only time will tell if he can ever lead this team to the playoffs.
2. Is Gary Kubiak the right man for the head coaching job? Like I said earlier, this team is full of young, talented players and if the team doesn't show signs of progress this year and they go 8-8 or worse, Kubiak could very easily be out the door in Houston. Lets not forget that next season it is possible that Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, and Herman Edwards could all be potentially looking for head coaching jobs. If the Texans aren't at least 9-7, this could be Kubiak's last season in Houston.
3. Can this defense and former 1st and 2nd round picks: Shaun Cody, Travis Johnson, Amobi Okoye, Mario Williams, Connor Barwin, DeMeco Ryans, Chaun Thompson, Brian Cushing, Dunta Robinson, and Eugene Wilson play up to potential and carry this defense to a top 10 season in points allowed and yardage? That is a total of 10 players on one defense that were drafted in the 1st and 2nd round. The defense didn't play anywhere up to that standard last year and the Texans will look to rebound this year and if they can be a top 10 defense their offense should carry them the rest of the way to the playoffs. Not only do they have a total of 10 first and second round picks on defense, but they also infused this defense with 5 rookies from this years draft class and free agent defensive end Antonio Smith as well. If the Texans really want to make the playoffs, it will take a healthy Matt Schaub, and a revamped and hungry defense to do it.

2010 Outlook
In the last 5 years the Indianapolis Colts have gone 12-4, 14-2, 12-4, 13-3, and 12-4 respectively during the regular season. They are a combined 63-17 in regular season play and have won a Super Bowl in that time period. This is a Colts team who has done a great job of letting players go when they can no longer help (Marvin Harrison), and building through the draft to continue to give Peyton Manning weapons (Adrian Gonzalez, Donald Brown and watch out for Austin Collie!!). They still boast one of the best offensive lines in football and Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney still have the ability to get to the QB on any given play.
While Colts fans may not have liked the stagnant feeling of this offseason and just trying to stay status quo, the Colts have done a great job of managing the salary cap and not having to give up players that they want to keep. Arguably their biggest offseason loss was a punter, Hunter Smith, and they hope to replace him with 6th round pick Pat McAfee. While Tony Dungy is now gone and Jim Caldwell is the new head coach, this is still very much Peyton Manning's team and last season's MVP will look to have another MVP caliber season and lead the Colts to the promised land to even further his Hall-of-Fame resume.
While Peyton Manning has a great offensive line, and playmakers like Addai, Donald Brown, Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark around him, he will continue to be successful and as long as Manning is healthy, this Colts team can compete with anybody in the NFL. There will surely be a transition phase between Dungy and Caldwell simply because Dungy has been the Colts head coach for so long, but the veteran presence on this football team should make the transition very quick and easy. The AFC South is as tough of a division as there is in football, but the Colts have put themselves in a great position once again to try and claim the title as AFC South champions.

2010 Outlook:
There will probably be no greater offseason loss that will effect a team more this season than the Titans loss of DT Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth was the most highly sought after player in all of free agency and the Redskins made him a very rich offer that he couldn't refuse. The Titans meanwhile did about as much as they could to try and replace him by picking up lesser known Jovan Haye from Tampa Bay and selecting underrated prospect Sen'Derrick Marks in the 2nd round of the draft. The fact remains though is that even if they would have picked a defensive tackle in the 1st round, or spent even more to get a better free agent than Haye, there was still simply no replacing Albert Haynesworth.
While the defense will have to do some improvement from within in order to try and make up for the loss of Haynesworth, the offense remains basically intact and will hope that the additions of 1st round pick Kenny Britt and free agent signee Nate Washington will elevate this passing game to another level. If either Britt or Washington can be a bona fide number 1 receiver this year, the Titans will already be way better than they were last season on offense. Chris Johnson and Lendale White are still one of the best 1-2 combinations in football and maybe we might even see the Titans utilize Vince Young more this season than last as well.
How is this for a first 6 weeks of the season? Play 4 out of 6 on the road, and play 3 of your 6 games against the likes of defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh, Peyton Manning and the Colts and Tom Brady and the Patriots. Not an easy way by any stretch of the imagination for Jeff Fisher and company. The Titans have the team and the coaching staff to put together another very successful season but overall this schedule may be just too overwhelming for any team. They play upper echelon teams in: Pittsburgh, Indianapolis (twice), New England, Arizona, and San Diego. They also play teams that are on the rise such as: Houston (twice), San Francisco, Buffalo, and Miami. It's a daunting schedule to say the least, but the Titans should be tough enough overall to still have a good chance at post-season play.
