Fantasy Football Studs, Stinkers, & Sleepers Week 5

Studs

1. Terrell Owens- Owens is no longer a must-start but I like his opportunities against the Browns defensive backs
2. Adrian Peterson- Looking for the bounce back game after last week.
3. Desean Jackson- The matchup vs. Talib is a good one but Jackson has been stellar so far this year.
4. Brian Westbrook- Coming off the bye week Westbrook should be ready to motor in week 5.
5. Maurice Jones-Drew- Seattle's linebackers are good but Jones-Drew will have plenty of opportunities.
6-9. Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald- Anytime a game is supposed to be an offensive explosion there always seems to be some let down but if this game lives up to the hype the main players will all have huge fantasy days.
10-11. Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark- I expect that the Titans will try and lock down Reggie Wayne but there will still be plenty of opportunities for Clark and Manning against the Titans awful pass defense.
12. Chris Johnson- The Titans have to keep it close for Johnson to live up to his potential in this game but even in the passing game he is dangerous.

Stinkers

1. Willie Parker- Coming back from injury but Mendenhall seems to be the man in Steeltown now.
2. Matthew Stafford- Injured and Culepper could get the start.
3. Eli Manning- Injured, expected to play, but even if he does play the Raiders pass defense is actually formidable.
4. Fred Taylor- Having surgery and out for the foreseeable future.
5. Frank Gore- Out again this week
6. Cedric Benson- Tough matchup against the Ravens defense
7. Kevin Smith- The Steelers defense should be able to keep him under wraps.
8. Derrick Mason- Bengals defense has shut down the opposing teams number 1 wide-out in every game this season.
9. Correll Buckhalter- Injured and may not play against the Pats.
10. Thomas Jones- Not a fan of Jones vs. the Dolphins defense.

Sleepers

1-2. Derek Anderson and Mohamed Massaqoui- Showed flashes last week and aren't exactly going against a dominant defense in Buffalo.
3. Rashard Mendenhall- Maybe not so much of a sleeper after last week but many people are expecting his production to drop now that Parker is back... don't bet on it.
4. David Garrard- The Seahawks defense leaves a lot to be desired. Garrard probably won't have a huge game but 250 and 2 td's is easily obtainable.
5. Knoshown Moreno- With Buckhalter possibly out it allows Moreno to get the majority of the carries. The Patriots defense is stout but Moreno could get 60 and a td.
6. Kerry Collins- A lot of people in Tennessee are clamoring for Vince Young but right now Collins is the QB and the Titans could end up having to put up some points to stick with the Colts. I like Collins in this game.
7. Laurence Maroney- With Taylor out Maroney and Green-Ellis are both in for some more carries potentially. Maroney could be the benefactor this week.
8. John Carlson- Carlson is one of my favorite tight end picks this week, regardless of who starts at QB.
9. Josh Johnson- Probably won't put up anything flashy but if you are in desperate need of a QB, Johnson could have a solid game this week.
10. Jericho Cotchery- The Dolphins aren't blessed with the leagues best defensive backs and he now finally has a receiver opposite of him (Braylon Edwards) to take some of the pressure off.

Ranking the Games for Week 5

1. New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos, Sunday 3:15 CST, CBS

Not even the most hardcore of Broncos fans could have envisioned a few weeks ago that this would have been the game of the week this week. As everybody knows Josh McDaniels is from the Bill Belichick coaching tree and was highly scrutinized in the offseason for his management of the team. Now after 4 weeks McDaniels is 4-0 and playing against his former boss. The Broncos have been absolutely phenomenal on defense so far while the Patriots are still tyring to get their rhythm back on offense. The main matchup in this game to watch will be the Broncos defense vs. the Patriots offense and specifically Randy Moss vs. Champ Bailey. Should be a very good game that believe it or not the Broncos should have a chance to win.

2. Atlanta Falcons @ San Francisco 49ers, Sunday 3:05 CST, FOX

It's almost a shame that Frank Gore is injured for this game because this is sure to be a smash mouth, old fashioned brawl of a football game between two teams that play physical on both sides of the ball. The injury to Gore and the bye week for the Falcons gives a slight edge to Atlanta, but the 49ers are at home and won't lay down for anybody. It may not be the sexiest game in the world but if I was going to watch one game this week, this would be the one. The key matchup to watch in this game is Michael Turner vs. Patrick Willis. At some point these two physical players are going to collide and it will be a sight to see.

3. Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens, Sunday 12:00 CST, CBS

First place in the AFC North will be on the line when these two rivals meet up on Sunday. The Bengals have surprised some teams out of the gate (Pittsburgh and Green Bay especially) with their offensive and defensive play. The Bengals arguably should be 4-0 if it weren't for the Brandon Stokely miracle in week 1 and if that were the case the Bengals (not the Broncos) would be the talk of the league. Either way both the Ravens and the Bengals are having very successful seasons so far and the winner will be in sole possession of first place. The key matchup in this game will be the Ravens tackles Jared Gaither and Michael Oher vs. the Bengals defensive ends Antwan Odom and Robert Geathers.

4. New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins, Monday 7:30 CST, ESPN

In the past four weeks the Jets have shut down Kerry Collins, Matt Schaub, Tom Brady and Drew Brees. Now they get to face Chad Henne. Henne had a successful debut last week to get the Dolphins in the win column but he will have his work cut out for him this week against probably the best defense in the NFL. While Henne won his game last week Mark Sanchez had his worst game as a pro. Sanchez turned the ball over 4 times, 2 directly resulting in touchdowns for the Saints. It is a game that pits two young and talented quarterbacks against each other but the real key to the game will be both defenses. The top matchup in this game is Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown against the Jets front seven led by David Harris and Kris Jenkins.

5. Houston Texans @ Arizona Cardinals, Sunday 3:15 CST, CBS

This game may not have the two best teams in football, but it does contain two of most entertaining offenses in all of football. This game also has quite possibly the two best receivers in the NFL in Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. Both teams have the ability to put up points and it could end up being a high scoring affair. The matchup to watch is Cardinals corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie vs. Texans WR Andre Johnson. If Rodgers-Cromartie can contain Johnson the Cardinals will have a decisive advantage in this game.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars @ Seattle Seahawks, Sunday 3:15 CST, CBS

The Jacksonville Jaguars have won their last two games while the Seahawks have lost 3 in a row. It is a battle of two teams heading in opposite directions and the Jaguars have a big opportunity to win their third game in a row. Seattle may get Matt Hasselbeck back this week which would be a huge boost to their offense but overall the Jaguars have been playing much better football than Seattle. Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Lofa Tatupu will be a good matchup to watch as Seattle has to find a way to contain Jones-Drew if they want to win this game.

7. Indianapolis Colts @ Tennessee Titans, Sunday 7:20 CST, NBC

I'm sure NBC was hoping for a better matchup than a 4-0 team vs. an 0-4 team. The Titans started 10-0 last season and since have managed a record of only 3-8 in their last 11 games. The Titans are desperate for a rebound game and if they could somehow get a win against the Colts it would be their last chance to really salvage their season. Likely even if the Titans won here it would be too steep a climb for the Titans to dig out of but a loss to the Colts and their season is officially ruined. All Peyton Manning and the Colts have to do is play their game and they should get a road win against the Titans. Matchup to watch: David Stewart and Michael Roos vs. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

8. Pittsburgh Steelers @ Detroit Lions, Sunday 12:00 CST, CBS

The Steelers finally showed last week that they may be able to run the football again and if that is the case the Lions are in big trouble. The Steelers over the past year and a half had seemingly lost their way in regards to running the football but against the Chargers they were able to run the ball with authority which is very good news for the Steelers. The Lions meanwhile have been much more competitive in the first 4 weeks of the season but face the possibility of playing against the defending Super Bowl champs without 1st overall pick Matthew Stafford. With or without Stafford the Steelers will be heavy favorites but Stafford could make it competitive. Key matchup: Calvin Johnson vs. Ike Taylor

9. Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers, Sunday 12:00 CST, FOX

Something tells me a bye was exactly what the doctor ordered for the 0-3 Carolina Panthers. Likewise a game against the Buccaneers was exactly what the Redskins needed. Both teams will look to get the ball rolling in the right direction against a team that's struggling just as much as themselves. If the Redskins can get a win they will somehow be 3-2 despite their multitude of problems thus far. If the Panthers get a win they will still only be 1-3 but it would at least be a step in the right direction. Key matchup: Jon Fox vs. Jim Zorn (the loser may have a hard time keeping their job at the end of the season... if not sooner).

10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday 12:00 CST, FOX

Finally we will get to see what it is like to have Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb both at quarterback for the Eagles. That may be one of the only things to look forward to in this mismatched game. The Eagles are 2-1 and coming off a bye week, they will also get back Donovan McNabb and are playing at home. The Buccaneers meanwhile are starting 2nd year quarterback Josh Johnson, are 0-4 and are desperately searching for answers. Key matchup: Gaines Adams vs. Donovan McNabb. Adams has to find a way to get to McNabb and keep him under pressure and not let him get comfortable with his rib injury. If Adams and the Buccaneers defensive line can make things hard on McNabb they will at least have a punchers chance.

11. Oakland Raiders @ New York Giants, 12:00 CST, CBS

Take the 32nd ranked offense and place them against the 1st ranked defense and the result is a game that has an opportunity to be very ugly. These two teams are basically polar opposites of one another. About the only way the Giants could possibly lose this game is if they shoot themselves in the foot and give the game to the Raiders. The Raiders could catch a break if Eli Manning doesn't play but the good news is that no matter who the Giants start at QB he will probably be better than JaMarcus Russell. The best matchup in this game is Steve Smith vs. Nnamdi Asomugha.

12. Minnesota Vikings @ St. Louis Rams, 12:00 CST, FOX

Another in a long line of mismatches this week features the Vikings vs. the Rams. If anybody is a fan of the running game this could be good game to watch because it features two of the leagues top running backs in Steven Jackson and Adrian Peterson. After being shut down by Green Bay a week ago Peterson will look to rebound against the 0-4 Rams while Steven Jackson and the Rams offense will be trying anything and everything in their power to get their offense clicking. This is a great opportunity for the Vikings to move to 5-0 but no NFL road game is a given. The best battle will be between Steven Jackson and the Williams Wall.

13. Dallas Cowboys @ Kansas City Chiefs, 12:00 CST, FOX

Outside of the Bengals/Ravens game the noon games this week leave a lot to be desired. This game is a perfect example as the 2-2 Cowboys face the 0-4 Chiefs. The Chiefs are a mess on both offense and defense and are in full fledged rebuild mode while the Cowboys are trying to put the pieces together and get things worked out to compete for a playoff spot. If the Cowboys are serious in their push towards the playoffs they are going to need to beat the Chiefs this week and more importantly they are going to need Tony Romo to be much more careful with the football. Matchup to watch: Mike Vrabel vs. Jason Witten

14. Cleveland Browns @ Buffalo Bills, 12:00 CST, CBS

I'm really trying to find something entertaining that will be going on in this game that would make it worth watching but there really isn't a whole lot going on. We have the debut of Chansi Stuckey on the Browns... or how about Marshawn Lynch's first game at home back from suspension... or maybe an increased role for Browns rookie wide-out Brian Robiskie? There aren't a whole lot of story lines going on in this game and there aren't a lot of great individual matchups that are really worth watching. The Browns already started rebuilding this week by trading away Braylon Edwards and if the Bills can't win this game they might as well start as well. Key matchup: Aaron Maybin vs. Joe Thomas. Maybin may be young but he is talented and Thomas is one of the top left tackles in all of football.

Top 10 Observations from Week 4 (Packers @ Vikings)

1. Everybody in the entire sports world knew that this game was a big game. First of all it's the biggest rivalry game that the Packers have going right now. That in and of itself makes it an important game. Secondly, this is a division game making it an important game. Finally we all know the Favre aspect that was in this game making it a highly rated, entire nation watching affair. The coaches don't like each other, the quarterbacks seemingly don't like each other and it was Brett Favre vs. the Green Bay Packers. Everybody knew how big of a game this really was. For how important this game was to the Packers it is completely unacceptable to have so many drops, turnovers, sacks and penalties basically giving away the game before it even began. Over the first three weeks the Packers have had problems with sacks, drops, and penalties but in this game they added turnovers to the list. This was a game that the Packers were supposed to play their best and really rally around Aaron Rodgers and send a message to Brett Favre and the Vikings. Instead it sent a message that the Packers are a sloppy football team that has absolutely no rhythm whatsoever right now. In a game of this magnitude the huge amount of self inflicted errors is extremely alarming and is the number one reason to come away worried after this game.

2. A couple of weeks ago I stated that the sack problem was a major issue but that Aaron Rodgers holding onto the ball was the least of the worries. On Monday, Aaron Rodgers held onto the ball way too long and it is now becoming a problem. The biggest issue that Aaron Rodgers has right now is not getting rid of the ball on first and second down. Every quarterback, even the great ones, have some weakness. For so long Brett Favre would throw passes into coverage just to avoid a sack, so far Aaron Rodgers instead of forcing the ball is taking the sack. If Aaron Rodgers can just get rid of the ball on first and second down it will help the Packers stay in manageable down and distances. If he takes a sack on third down it is less of a problem. It's not an awful trait because many times he makes so many things happen with his ability to move out of the pocket. As an example the huge touchdown to Jermichael Finley would have never happened had it not been for Rodgers ability to keep the play alive. It is important to not take the sack and stick with the progressions on 1st and 2nd downs so that on 3rd down its not 3rd and 10+ yards. Out of the 8 sacks on Monday I really only counted 1-2 sacks that were direct results of the offensive line not protecting through the progression. Rodgers needs to take a solid portion of the blame on Monday.

3. The Packers have to find a way to get Greg Jennings involved in the offense. Green Bay has always done a good job of not trying to force the ball to a specific player and instead try to find the open player but a good coach finds a way to get the ball in the hands of their best players. Greg Jennings is the Packers best offensive weapon and through the first 4 weeks he has basically been shut out. If the Packers had Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss or Andre Johnson I guarantee they would try and make getting the ball to them a priority, it should be no different for Jennings.

4. I have no idea what to make out of the Packers current defense. Individually Cullen Jenkins, B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, Johnny Jolly, Brandon Chillar, Desmond Bishop, Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Clay Matthews, Brady Poppinga, Aaron Kampman, Charles Woodson, Al Harris, Tramon Williams and Nick Collins are all better than average defensive players. They all have playmaking ability and have all shown the ability to succeed within either system over the past two years. As a team however the Packers simply aren't getting the job done. They are one of the best playmaking defenses in all of football but they are extremely inconsistent and have an extremely hard time getting off the field on 3rd down. It's a possibility that they still aren't completely entrenched in the 3-4 defense yet but right now the Packers have to pick it up on defense if they want to win football games because they are far from a championship defense at this point in the season.

5. One area that the Packers can build on is their run defense the last two weeks. The Packers played the best running back in football this week in Adrian Peterson and one of the best running backs last week in Steven Jackson. Both weeks they did a good job of containing and keeping the running backs from making big plays. Jackson got his yards but didn't gouge the Packers repeatedly. Peterson never got going and the Packers were even able to strip the ball from him and return it for a touchdown. Add those two performances with their performance against Matt Forte and the Packers have been very good against the run in 75% of the games and against some pretty good running backs. Now it's up to the pass defense to get more pressure and lock down the receivers.

6. The Packers had the right game plan on defense against Minnesota but their secondary and defensive line didn't pull through in the passing game. The Packers loaded up against the run and were concentrated on not letting Adrian Peterson beat them. This was 100% the right philosophy but in turn what it did was make Brett Favre throw the ball to beat them and gave him opportunities to do so. The bad news was that Brett Favre beat the Packers defense repeatedly. There were times that he was given way too much time and other times where he was able to fit the ball into some tight spots but overall the Packers couldn't stop Favre and the Vikings pass offense.

7. The bye week could not come at a better time for the Packers. The Packers are a 2-2 team right now and really they have played like a 2-2 team. The win against the Bears is a quality win and they beat the Rams which was expected. The losses to the Vikings and Bengals weren't pretty but those two teams are a combined 7-1. With the bye week coming up the Packers will have the ability to address their offensive line issues, possibly getting Clifton and even Tauscher back, and settling down their defense who could also get Atari Bigby back. After the bye they then have games against the Lions and the Browns to hopefully build momentum and finally get in a rhythm. If all goes well they will be 4-2 before their 2nd matchup with Favre and the Vikings in Lambeau.

8. The defensive front 7 is in serious need of a true, consistent playmaker. Take a look at some of the top defenses in all of football and each of them have a playmaker that the other team constantly has to scheme against. The Giants have multiple on their defensive line, the Steelers have their outside linebackers, the Ravens have H. Ngata, the Jets have Kris Jenkins and so on and so forth. Right now the Packers have plenty of solid performers but not one person who strikes fear in the heart of their opponents. If will take that type of player for the Packers to become a top 5 defense.

9. Maybe the most frustrating thing about Brett Favre playing for the Vikings is his ability to not turn the ball over so far this year. For years and years and years coaches Mike Holmgren, Mike Sherman, Mike McCarthy, Ray Rhodes and quarterback coaches Tom Clements, Darrell Bevell, Andy Reid, amongst others have all tried to get Brett Favre to play with less wreckless abandon and with a more conservative approach. For the most part Favre continued to turn the ball over. Now all of sudden he goes to the Vikings and he is able to flip a switch to not throw passes into triple coverage? Obviously it is a small sampling of games and there is a long season still remaining but so far the most frustrating part of this whole mess is that he is playing the way the Packers have asked him to play for so long and now he's doing it against them.

10. The Vikings have done a really good job of putting together a group of playmakers on offense. Minnesota has now seemingly hit on two major playmakers in the draft over the past 3 years. Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin are two players that defenses have to keep an eye on at all times. Add an improving Sidney Rice, a 3rd down back like Chester Taylor, a deep threat in Bernard Berrian, a solid offensive line, and a veteran quarterback like Brett Favre and this offense can at times be a daunting task to defend against. It all comes back to Adrian Peterson though and even while the Packers shut him down on Sunday their focus on him allowed open passing lanes and time to throw the football. At any given time on any given play Peterson and the Vikings offense has the ability to take it to the house for 6.
